Remote Access for Students

Introduction

Students can access university academic resources including specialized courseware that they typically use in campus computer labs and classrooms by using their personal devices and following this guide.

All device types work to access the following resources. All that is needed is an internet connection and a browser. If a student does not have a laptop or desktop computer, a fall back is using their cell phone to access Moodle and myapps.up.edu.

If a student does not have internet access, a fall back is using their cell phone as a hotspot. If that is also not an option, the student should speak with their Dean to determine a plan.

  • Access to specialized courseware like software titles found in the campus computer classrooms (BC 15, FH 107, SH 206, SH 249, SH 123) is available to students currently enrolled in courses in these rooms.
  • Students can sign in to desktop.up.edu and select the appropriate virtual desktop for their course.
  • Students MUST SIGN OUT once their class ends according to their regular class schedule. Students who forget to sign off will automatically be signed off after a set time period.
  • P drives are also available from the student kiosk and special courseware virtual desktops.

Security Tips

  • KEEP ALL MOBILE DEVICES PHYSICALLY SECURE. DO NOT LEAVE DEVICES IN YOUR CAR.
  • Keep a clean machine. Having the latest operating system, software, web browsers, anti-virus protection and apps are the best defenses against viruses, malware, and other online threats.
  • Secure mobile devices. Use strong passwords, passcodes or other features such as touch identification to lock your devices. Securing your device can help protect your information if your device is lost or stolen and keep prying eyes out.
  • Get savvy about Wi-Fi hotspots. Public wireless networks and hotspots are not secure, which means that anyone could potentially see what you are doing on your laptop or smartphone while you are connected to them. Limit what you do on public Wi-Fi. Avoiding banking and signing in to sensitive data accounts.
  • Utilize approved technologies as described above to ensure secure access to university data and resources.
